After the events of today – and the Obama Administration’s attempts to cover them up – I couldn’t stand it anymore. I’ve decided to take my thoughts public. Please let me know what you think. This is my first post, so please let me know any thoughts you might have!
Attorney General Eric Holder made an eleventh hour request for the White House to invoke executive privilege in a last-ditch attempt to defend himself from the House Oversight Committee’s scheduled vote to hold him in contempt of Congress. President Obama approved that request, shielding thousands of pages of documents from committee chairman Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), who has aggressively pursued the investigation.
The thing is, for the President to even acknowledge this issue has been a rarity. The use of executive privilege is something which can only be done under a very limited set of circumstances. Most importantly, invoking it implies that the White House had a role in Operation Fast and Furious, something that even their political opponents had never accused them of doing. The whole purpose of the investigation was to see if the Attorney General played any role in the incident, something which he has steadfastly denied. The fact that the White House is now claiming executive privilege makes it very clear that President Obama bears some responsibility for what happened.
In case anybody needs a refresher on that: more than 2,000 were given to Mexican drug gangs with no plan to account for them. U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry was found dead out in the desert, a victim of a murder that occurred using one of these weapons. Congress attempted to launch an investigation, but was stonewalled by Eric Holder and pushed for contempt. The House Oversight Committee voted on contempt today, June 20, 2012, ultimately approving a contempt charge to be sent to the House floor.
